NH #410: Chernobyl #3: Harrowing Play-by-Play of an Ultimate Nuclear Disaster – Author Adam Higginbotham

Chernobyl play-by-play of how the disaster happened: new book by Adam Higginbotham

This Week’s Featured Interview:

  • Adam Higginbotham is the author of MIDNIGHT IN CHERNOBYL: The Untold Story of the World’s Greatest Nuclear Disaster, the first complete account of the catastrophe that encircled the world and helped precipitate the fall of the Soviet Union. Higginbotham draws upon recently declassified documents, letters, unpublished memoirs and material from the archives of the Chernobyl Museum in Kiev, as well as scores of original interviews with participants in the events of 1986. The book reads like a thriller, with identifiable characters, arcs of action or inaction, good guys, bad guys, dupes, government corruption, and international politics. It is almost a great book. But as you will hear, he and I also have a complete variance of opinion when it comes to his conclusions as to Chernobyl’s ultimate impact on the world.

Numnutz of the Week (for Outstanding Nuclear Boneheadedness):

Radioactive beer?  OK, so it might give me internal contamination – but how does it taste
