NH #285: Illinois’ Corporate Welfare Bailout of Exelon + Nuclear Waste Strategy Summit SPECIAL
This Week’s Featured Interviews:
Activists and genuine experts from around the US, Canada and First Nations gathered in Chicago last weekend for a National Radioactive Nuclear Waste Strategy Summit – a 3-day planning extravaganza focusing on: radioactive waste creation, storage, treatment, and disposal; reactor decommissioning; effects of uranium mining on indigenous population; national proposals for away-from-reactor “centralized interim storage” (CIS) of spent reactor fuel; and small modular reactors (SMRs).
The Summit began the day after the Illinois “corporate welfare” bailout of two aging, failing Exelon nuclear reactors. The two events became intertwined, with fascinating comments, perspectives, and more than a little righteous rage coming from the interviewees:
- Dave Kraft, Director, Nuclear Energy Information Service (NEIS)
- Karen Hadden, Executive Director, SEED (Sustainable Energy and Economic Development) Coalition
- Alice Canestaro-Garcia of My Energy/Energia Mia in San Antonio, Texas.
- Leona Morgan of Diné No Nukes.
- Kevin Kamps, Nuclear Waste Watchdog, Beyond Nuclear
- Ian Zabarte of the Native Community Action Council, representing the Western Shoshone and Southern Paiute people.
- Susan Corbett of the Sierra Club Nuclear Free Campaign. The Sierra Club National Office can be contacted by clicking on the name; phoning: 415-977-5500; or writing to: Sierra Club National Headquarters 2101 Webster St Suite 1300. Oakland, CA 94612.
- Donna Gilmore heads San Onofre Safety.
Numnutz of the Week (for Nuclear Boneheadedness):
If you are anywhere in the EU, do not eat wild-picked “organic” berries from Ukraine!
They just might glow in the dark!
